Carao – Exotic Tropical Fruit – Anemia Folk Remedy
What if there was an exotic fruit that existed which some people have said tastes a little like chocolate and cherry? I have always loved trying new fruits. When I lived in Costa Rica, I would try all kinds of new and wild fruits at the local farmer’s markets.
The locals told me about a very exotic, but well-known fruit in Costa Rica called CARAO that is a folk remedy for anemia. While I don’t think it tastes exactly like chocolate and cherry, it has a very unique taste.
Anemia is a health condition where the total red blood cells or hemoglobin in the blood decrease. Consequently, this lowers the ability of the body to have fresh oxygen carried around.
Symptoms include fatigue, poor concentration, weakness, shortness of breath, increased thirst and feeling like one may faint or lose consciousness. Clinically, it is rare for me to see anyone new in the clinic who doesn’t feel tired. It is a huge problem.

The reason why this is a big deal is because it is estimated that nearly 1 billion people in the world have anemia and complications from it result in nearly 200,000 deaths every year.
In Chinese medicine, we generally refer to anemia as a blood deficiency (liver and heart blood deficiency). It doesn’t mean that people don’t have the right quantity of blood, it refers to the QUALITY of blood not being what it should be. Many modern foods contribute to the quality of the blood not being good. Those foods include refined sugar, dairy products, genetically modified foods (wheat, corn, soy, canola), and alcohol.
What is important if you have anemia is the following:
- Eat lots of fresh organic vegetables and fruits.
- Consider supplementing with iron and vitamin C.
- Consider taking a safe Chinese herbal formula for building or tonifying up the blood. One of the most popular formulas is Si Wu Tang. Consider taking 2 teaspoons in water or juice with food or on an empty stomach once per day.
If you want to try new things and want to try a fruit that has been well-known in Costa Rica to help build up the blood, I would highly encourage you to try CARAO Fruit Extract. Check it out HERE.
It has a thick syrup-like consistency. It is suggested to consume about 4 ounces per day.
