Dunkin’ Donuts and Baskin-Robbins to Remove Artificial Food Coloring
By Heather Callaghan, Editor
While most health sites would not likely endorse eating at Baskin-Robbins or Dunkin’ Donuts – we know people do.
And if they should partake in a sweet treat, they don’t deserve harmful and unnecessary ingredients. Period.
Not only are there more natural ways to make that minty ice cream green or that strawberry ice cream pink, but if Breyers Ice Cream has shown us anything, it’s that people want deliciousness – leave the toxic colors behind.
Artificial food coloring is one such ingredient that simply isn’t necessary and is linked to harmful nervous system conditions such as the exacerbation of ADHD. In fact, the European Food Safety Authority requires warning labels on food products containing artificial food coloring.
The FDA refuses to acknowledge that synthetic, petroleum-based dyes pose a risk, whereas Europe often uses plant-based substitutes for food coloring. Example: Britain uses pumpkin and carrot extracts for orange soda. (If Fanta complies overseas, why can’t they use safer ingredients here in the States?)

So it is with great pleasure to announce a great step in the right direction on the part of a big food chain combo who declared they were removing artificial food coloring.
According to GNN:
Dunkin’ Brands Group Inc., the company in charge of donut franchise and Baskin-Robbins, has just announced that they are removing artificial coloring and flavoring from all of their menu items […]
“It’s our goal to meet the evolving needs of our guests, including their preference for more nutritional transparency and simpler ingredients, while maintaining the great taste and fun, and vibrant colors expected from Dunkin’ Donuts,” wrote the Dunkin’ Editorial Staff. “We know that this is important to you, so it is important to us.”
Unfortunately, these things take time – by the end of 2018 to be exact.

But according to the company, they have been replacing food ingredients with healthier options since 2014 including items that use less salt and sugar. They say they only want to serve food derived from natural ingredients in the future.
Remember – if you want to make your own treat and want it to look like a Homer Simpson doughnut, you can use some beet juice or safer food coloring. Don’t forget the naturally colored sprinkles!
