Another Recall: Burn Baby, Burn — Fitness Tracker Inferno!
By B.N. Frank
Just announced! ANOTHER Fitness Tracker recall! This time it’s due to burn risk.
Portland-based Provata Health has recalled around 30,000 fitness trackers following reports of burns due to overheating issues.
[…]
The Chinese manufactured devices come with a digital display, accelerometer, optical heart rate sensor and Bluetooth technology. They are offered in three colors: black, blue and mint green.
The recall was made following 13 reports of overheating issues while charging or during use. In three cases, users suffered burns to their wrists under the watch body.
This is very reminiscent of issues that occurred with Intel owned Basis fitness trackers back in 2014. A small number of people reported that their Peak watches overheated, and in some cases caused discomfort, blistering or burns on their wrist. Intel recalled all of the watches and issued refunds to customers. The company no longer supports the watch, and has since shut down access to customer data.

While doing research on this most recent recall, we learned about ANOTHER ACTIVITY TRACKER RECALL in 2016 by none other than fast food chain, McDonald’s:
Hazard: Risk of Skin Irritation or Burn
Take the wristbands away from children immediately and return them to any McDonald’s® restaurant for a replacement toy and either a yogurt tube or a bag of apple slices.

At McDonald’s, our highest priority is the safety and well-being of our customers. We take great pride in serving our customers around the world every day with safe and high quality toys. However, we have identified an issue with certain children’s products, and in an abundance of caution we are voluntarily recalling them. These products are Step-iT Activity Wristbands that come in two styles—an Activity Counter and a motion-activated Light-up Band.
We recently received reports involving skin irritation and burns after wearing the wristband. We take all reports seriously, and upon further investigation, we immediately stopped distribution of the wristbands at our restaurants. We are in the process of recovering these products from our restaurants and from our customers.
HOLY SMOKES, Hamburglar!
Even for those who haven’t noticed any problems with their Fitbits or other activity trackers, one study reported that wearers actually lose less weight than non-wearers.
In the JAMA study, 470 people were told to exercise more and consume a diet low in calories. All of them began to lose weight. After six months, half of the participants were asked to self-report their exercise and diet; the other half wore fitness trackers to keep track of their activity levels. Although both groups had been equally active by the end of two years, those who wore the fitness trackers had actually lost less weight.
Perhaps this is because exposure to wireless WiFi radiation and other sources of Electrosmog can cause blood sugar fluctuations which can cause WEIGHT GAIN. Wow! Huge bummer, right?
All of this considered, it’s pretty insane that some insurance companies have recently started encouraging or requiring clients to wear Fitbits and other activity trackers. You’d think they’d want their clients to remain healthy and of course, alive. Perhaps the bigger irony is that many insurance companies aren’t covering harm caused by wireless radiation exposure either.
The heat was on, rising to the top
Everybody is going strong
And that is when my spark got hot
I heard somebody say “Burn, Baby, Burn.”
