doTerra introduced Copaiba Essential Oil in 2017. It is harvested in the Brazilian Amazon by tapping into a tree, much like extracting maple syrup. While many Americans are pronouncing it “Co-pie-ba”, the Brazilian pronunciation is “Copa-ee-ba”. So, you may hear it pronounced either way.
7 Copaiba Essential Oil Uses for Health and Healing the Body explains that Copaiba can be used as an anti-inflammatory and an anti-septic. It says that Copaiba protects the liver. “Not only does copaiba act as a pain killer itself, but it can also help reduce liver tissue damage that is caused by acetaminophens like Tylenol…. We have already looked at how copaiba essential oil uses can be used to treat different kinds of infections…this suggests that people prone to infection…could benefit from safe, internal use of copaiba oil.
However, it warns: “it is vital that you follow safety guidelines. Taking too much of the oil can actually cause harm…Be sure to limit to 1-2 drops each dose and spread doses out to every 4 hours. The safest way to consume is in a gel capsule filled with olive oil, or you can dilute with some coconut oil and sweetened it up with a little honey. Like any essential oil that you take orally, it is vital that you consult with your physician and never take more than the recommended dose. “
The article points out: “Though most essential oils can often be used safely on the skin when mixed with a carrier oil, many of these oils are not safe for use orally. However, copaiba oil is safe if used properly.”
The articles below show why Copaiba is being widely seen as a panacea greater than CBD Hemp Oil!

Why Copaiba is Better Than CBD Hemp Oil
Five reasons Copaiba is better than CBD Oil says that beta-carophyllene (BCP) in Copaiba explains why it works better than CBD or THC Hemp Oil. It discusses the CB1 and CB2 cannabinoid receptors and points out, “You might not have known this, but many over the counter medications rely on the cannabinoid receptors to relieve your aches and pains….These receptors govern many of our body’s key systems and have wide ranging impacts on our health.”
The article adds: “The CB2 receptors are found throughout the body and have wide impacts on health. BCPs bind to these receptors and have a mountain of evidence to back up their support against temporary inflammation, easing tension and discomfort, providing protective effects on kidney and liver systems, provide protection against auto-immune disruptions, easing anxious and depressive feelings and even helping to abstain from unhealthy habits such as alcohol dependence!
CB2 activation is correlated with the concentration of BCP’s and CBD oil is 35% BCP while Copaiba is 55%. This means that even if you are using high quality cannabis oil, it may be the BCP’s that are doing all the work in easing your health issues and you could switch to Copaiba and get even more relief.”
The article concludes: “There is no THC in Copaiba which means that it won’t give you a false positive on a drug test. In fact, BCP’s are in plenty of other foods and even other essential oils but nowhere near these concentrations or purity. To get the amazing benefits of BCP from the Copaiba essential oil, you can use it aromatically by diffusing, applying it topically to affected areas, or internally. My favorite use is to apply it under the tongue to calm down before sleeping.”
Three Types of Cannabinoids
CBD vs Copaiba oil – what’s the difference?? explains the three types of cannabinoids and the CB1 and CB2 receptors – essential to understanding why Copaiba is more effective than CBD or THC Hemp Oil and is much less expensive than CBD oil. Excerpts are copied below.
CBD: CBD, or CannaBiDiol, is a naturally occurring component of hemp plants. All CBD extractions contain some amount of THC. Benefits include pain relief, reduces anxiety, effective against cancer, treats seizures and other neurological issues, prevention of diabetes through lower insulin levels and promotes cardiovascular health. This is the power of cannabinoids!
THC: THC, or TetraHydroCannabinol, is the part of the plant that makes people feel high when they smoke marijuana. Supplements that contain THC are legal only in a few states.
BCP: BCP, or Beta-CaryoPhyllene, is the dietary cannabinoid in doTERRA’s Copaiba oil….While it affects the same CB2 receptors as CBD, BCP interacts DIRECTLY with receptors in amazing ways and is present in a much higher amount. Taken internally, Copaiba possesses strong antioxidant properties, promotes healthy cellular function, may help support immune function while supporting overall circulatory health, and may help support the health of the gastrointestinal tract and colon…. Topically applied Copaiba oil may also help keep the skin clear while helping to reduce the appearance of blemishes.
Cannabinoid Receptors
We have two types of receptors – CB1 and CB2. CB1 is predominantly present in the nervous system, connective tissues, gonads, glands, and organs. CB2 is predominantly found in the immune system and associated structures. Many tissues contain both CB1 and CB2 receptors linked to a different action.
THC interacts with CB1 receptors and causes psychotropic effects. CB2 receptors do not make you “high” when affected. CBD indirectly interacts with CB2 receptors while the main constituent of Copaiba interacts directly. CB2 receptors seem to reduce inflammation and certain kinds of pain.
Could this Essential Oil be Better than CBD Oil? contributes to this discussion as it points out:
“CBD benefits include acting as an anti-inflammatory, anticonvulsant, antioxidant, antiemetic, anxiolytic and antipsychotic agent, and is therefore a potential medicine for the treatment of neuroinflammation, epilepsy, oxidative injury, vomiting and nausea, anxiety and schizophrenia. However, after testing many CBD oils in the marketplace, it was found that they contained little to no active CBD. Additionally, CBD does not act directly on the CB1 or CB2 receptors. Rather, it acts in an indirect manner.
BCP is found in the essential oils of a variety of plants, including black pepper, rosemary, and melissa and has the ability to bind to CB2 receptors. What this means is that along with its cellular and skin-health supporting properties, due to its activation of CB2 receptors, beta-caryophyllene may also support healthy nervous and immune function, and have similar soothing and relaxing properties on the body (similar to that prompted by CB1 activation).
Copaiba oil is the best source of BCP, containing more than 50% beta-caryophyllene. That means that this BCP-rich essential oil, activates CB2 receptors, and positively influences your health by reducing pain, eliminating inflammation, calming the nervous system, supporting the cardiovascular, immune, digestive and respiratory systems, all while not giving off psychoactive side effects….It is a powerful antioxidant…. supports the cardiovascular, immune, digestive and respiratory systems, and even makes skin tighter and younger looking. Its aroma is similar to that of a balsam tree.”
Copaiba – Natural Anti-inflammatory – Better Than Cannabidiol brings this point home as it says:
“There is a lot of hype around Cannabidiol (CBD), for very good reasons. CBD is one of two well-known major cannabinoids, potent substances with enormous therapeutic potential, causing quite a buzz among scientists, health professionals and patients who are using CBD-rich products to treat a wide range of conditions including anxiety, antibiotic-resistant infections, cancer, cardiovascular disease, chronic pain, Crohn’s, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, PTSD, rheumatoid arthritis, schizophrenia and more.
However, legality, purity and potency get in the way of many realising any real relief from CBD. As a completely legal alternative, Copaiba…essential oil (EO), has the highest known botanical content of one of the most commonly found terpenes in Cannabis, beta-caryophyllene (BCP)…. About 20,000 terpenes exist in nature; around 200 have been identified in Cannabis.”
“Due to targeting CB2 receptors, BCP is an effective way to medicate while avoiding any alteration in perception or motor skills. It can be used to treat several inflammatory disorders, including arthritis, multiple sclerosis and colitis. BCP has been shown to fight cancer, reduce anxiety and is gastroprotective, meaning it can be used to treat ulcers. There is a mountain of evidence to support the use of BCP for easing tension and discomfort, providing protective effects for kidney and liver systems, providing protection against auto-immune disruptions, easing depressive feelings and even helping to abstain from unhealthy habits such as alcohol dependence. Copaiba also shows skin-enhancing benefits. Applied directly to acne pimples and scars, it reduces inflammation and speeds up skin healing.Â
CB2 activation is correlated with the concentration of BCP’s. CBD oil is 35% BCP while Copaiba is 55%. This means even using high quality Cannabis oil it may be BCP doing all the work in easing health issues. Switching to Copaiba may afford even more relief and due to there being no THC, it won’t give a false positive on a drug test. BCP’s are in plenty of foods and other essential oils but nowhere near the concentration nor purity found in Copaiba.”
The article concludes:
“To get the amazing benefits of BCP from Copaiba EO, use it aromatically, apply topically to affected areas or internally, for example, use as a calmative before sleep, applying a few drops under the tongue (sublingually). CBD oil produced from hemp might not actually have much CBD whilst oils derived from Cannabis might contain THC and heavy metal traces, depending on the soil it was grown in and extraction techniques employed. If you want access to similar health benefits of as those provided by cannabinoids, a 15 ml bottle of Copaiba EO is competitively priced, hugely discounted in comparison to a 15 ml bottle of CBD oil!
Copaiba is a stimulant oleoresin obtained from the trunk of several pinnate-leaved South American leguminous trees found in the Amazon. Its medicinal use dates back to the 16th century when natives of Brazil used it as folk medicine. Today, Brazil produces approximately 95% of this oil-resin, exporting more than 500 tons each year. Sales of Copaiba are increasing, at least in part because more than 54 million American adults suffer from some form of arthritis and 23.7 million are limited in their usual activity primarily due to pain.”
Looking for CBD Oil? Try Copaiba! points out:
“CBD Oil Vs. Copaiba Essential Oil
When it comes to finding relief, both mentally and physically, in the hustle and bustle of everyday life, one of the most sought-after oils is CBD oil. Derived from hemp, CBD oil, or Cannabidiol, is packed with nutrients and therapeutic properties that react favorably with the body’s natural processes…there is actually a great alternative. Although CBD oil is distilled directly from the cannabis plant, this natural botanical concentrate is non-psychotropic, which means it does not cause the euphoric high that is commonly associated with cannabis….The main component of both oils is beta-caryophyllene, which has been extensively studied for its anti-inflammatory properties and for its ability to modulate the body’s response to injury and irritation.
Copaiba Essential Oil: Use Less, Get More
While CBD oil contains a strong amount of beta-caryophyllene at about 30 percent, what many people don’t realize is that copaiba essential oil contains a whopping 40-70 percent!  What that means is just a few drops of this amazing oil can have all the benefits of CBD oil and then some, so you get a stronger therapeutic component while using less product.

Copaiba Oil – Just the Facts includes the following additional warnings:
- “Women who are nursing or pregnant should always avoid essential oils as we do not have enough information on how they affect babies.
- Copaiba in large doses has been known to cause nausea, vomiting, strangury, bloody urine, and fever (3). So rubbing some on your skin occasionally will probably be alright but rubbing it all over every day or taking more than 10 drops internally daily may cause problems. Use common sense, and always go to a doctor if you experience adverse side effects.
- Copaiba oil can be applied directly to the skin without dilution in most cases, however those with sensitive skin should take special care. (Read here for dilutions for sensitive skin).”
