How’s This EPA Nomination “Draining The Swamp”?
Donald J. Trump, where is your common sense, Mr. President?
How is nominating Peter C. Wright, an attorney who spent much of his professional career helping Monsanto and Dow Chemical Co. avoid cleaning up their toxic pollution and messes, to be the next head of the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Office of Land and Emergency Management in keeping with your pledge to “drain the swamp”?
First of all, do you know Wright’s past professional history? If not, may I respectfully suggest you come up to speed on it very fast, as your nomination will place an influential and Corporatocracy-swamp critter into the very federal agency that needs to be overhauled, if not completely reorganized, because EPA caters to the very polluters of the environment!

According to Wright’s LinkedIn page, prior to joining DowDuPont in 1999, Wright was an “environmental attorney” for Monsanto from 1989 to 1996. [Source: OCA “Take Action” website]
According to Organic Consumers Association (OCA),
Wright’s current employer, DowDuPont, is listed as the responsible party for more than 100 toxic Superfund sites that the EPA is trying to get cleaned up across the nation. [….]
Source: Organic Consumers Association email 3-28-18Wright has a long history of being on the wrong side of the chemical safety debate. One of his favorite defense strategies is to argue that dioxin, a known carcinogen and Monsanto and Dow pollutant, isn’t really as bad as the EPA makes it out to be—even though scientists place dioxin “among the most toxic chemicals known to man.” [2] [….]
And dioxins can end up in the food supply. The Michigan Department of Agriculture reports:
Low levels of dioxins are found throughout the environment as a by-product of combustion and chemical production processes. They can be detected in air, soil, water, sediment, fish and other foods like meat and dairy products. Some dioxins may be toxic and have the ability to cause illness or adverse health effects. [2] [….]
Wright’s “alternative facts” about dioxin go against well-established science. [2] [….]
Mr. President, what kind of logic is there in nominating someone, who because of prior employer-employee loyalties, could give DowDuPont and other polluters carte blanche and possibly even pull off another Comey-FBI-Clinton-like exoneration? Your nomination of Peter C. Wright makes no sense!
Hasn’t anyone pointed that out to you?
What you can do
Since DowDuPont attorney Wright has to be approved by the Senate, shouldn’t all those who really care about the environment getting cleaned up contact your respective U.S. Senators and tell them to vote “NO” on Wright’s nomination and approval as EPA’s Office of Land and Emergency Management chief officer?

Furthermore, OCA states,
He [Wright] even published an article in a law journal, “Twenty-five Years of Dioxin Cancer Risk Assessment,” where he contradicts the World Health Organization and EPA, claiming that:
“Over the last twenty-five years, dioxin has joined DDT, PCBs, lead, and mercury as an iconic environmental chemical. Yet, there is meager evidence that exposure to dioxin at the trace levels encountered in the environment has caused any observable harm to the short- or long-term health of the human population. Dioxin is unique in many respects because it is highly toxic to a variety of animal species but not to humans. Indeed, as has been widely reported, an exceedingly high dose of dioxin was not fatal to the current president of the Ukraine.”
However, there appears to be a pièce de résistance regarding Wright’s position at EPA—if he ever gets approved, and as OCA points out:
Not only that, but Wright, like many other appointees at federal agencies under Trump, will likely be granted an “ethics waiver” [1] that will allow him to decide how the EPA deals with these Superfund sites he defended for Monsanto and DowDuPont.
Truly, unbelievable Mr. President! Don’t you really care about the environment?
Mr. President, maybe the best thing to do is to withdraw Wright’s nomination and find a candidate who knows real science and does not believes in, nor spouts as ‘legal’, corporate and/or pseudoscience.
We’ve had enough of that kind of scientific BS in medicine, vaccines, food processing chemicals, etc. and we certainly don’t need more, especially at the EPA.
