The Off-Grid Rebellion the Media Doesn’t Want You to Know About
For many waking up in the modern world, the weight of the planet is on their shoulders. It seems like the more one learns, the more everything is in ruin. Climate catastrophe and secret financial institutions threaten devastation on all sides, the media is run by the corporate elite and filters the truth into coarse bits of marketing slogans, and there seems like no avenue to fight back, to levy solutions.
When even the charities seem corrupt, where does the charitable soul go?
When I moved to Montreal, I was desperate to get connected to a group that was actually making a difference. I joined an organization I’m proud to work with known as the Valhalla Movement.
What I discovered while working with them wasn’t how innovative they were for fighting for change, but how many people were fighting the good fight without finding their way into the public eye. I quickly learned that there were over 3,000 eco-communities in North America alone, enough that I should have been able to name a few dozen in my state alone. Yet, I couldn’t think of one.

Now, eco-community is a broad term, but not broad enough to cover all the varieties of change makers hidden in the woodwork. Those communities are where people live and work together on sustainable homes and technology, but North America houses an incredible number of activist groups working to lobby for better food and safety regulations, improve the soil quality, end corruption in politics- you name it.
I did a little digging, and found that my flight north could have been avoided- there were dozens of noteworthy organizations in my home city of Columbus, Ohio as well. How had I never heard about them?
Change-Makers Outside of the Public Eye
If you want to make a big difference in this day and age, the media is not on your side. Grassroots publications, social media, and blogging can propel an initiative to the front of the public mindset, but many just as soon get crucified for any conceivable infraction as praised for their efforts.
These are the people fighting the status quo, demanding a reduction on oil dependency, political free-for-alls, financial manipulation, and resource exploitation. They are not the friends of the corporate elite. And so they often fight on their own, in the shadows. Working hard to produce change, but silently as to not draw heat before they drawn in allies.
I was lucky to join Valhalla- spearheaded by an incredible team of entrepreneurs and marketing minds, they’ve used their talents to create their own public image, spreading a network and drawing in a wide variety of people from all walks of life into this growing counter-culture. But not everyone is willing to pack up their life and move to another country to find opportunity.

Solutions Abound – Come Find Them
For now, finding out about change makers in your area is a bit of a job. I’m personally utilizing my network to travel about and meet with more of them with a media team from Valhalla, groups likeNuMundo are working to create a network of “Impact Centers” where the curious are able to come, learn, and work with communities around the world. Programs like WWOOF and the Earthship Academy are working to provide opportunities for people to try to put their efforts to positive change anywhere there is a need.
The options might not be obvious, but they’re out there, and you can find them.
And if you’re not ready to pack up your life and move, but you want to get involved, Valhalla Movement has a massive project that’s been in the works for nearly five years which will very soon be changing the way society thinks about Suburbia forever. Click Here to Find Out More about WISDOM Homes.
