Hemp Finally Legalized in North Carolina

LAS VEGAS, NV— Nov 2, 2015 – Now LEGALIZED, North Carolina will be home to the only industrial hemp commercial decortication facility in the United States. On October 31, 2015 Governor Pat McCrory passed Senate Bill 313 (by not vetoing it) as “an act to recognize the importance and legitimacy of Industrial Hemp research, to provide for compliance with portions of the Federal Agricultural Act of 2014, and to promote increased agricultural employment.”

The North Carolina General Assembly:

…finds and declares that it is in the best interest of the citizens of North Carolina to promote and encourage the development of an industrial hemp industry in the State in order to expand employment, promote economic activity, and provide opportunities to small farmers for an environmentally sustainable and profitable use of crop lands that might otherwise be lost to agricultural production. The purposes of this Article are to establish an agricultural pilot program for the cultivation of industrial hemp in the State, to provide for reporting on the program by growers and processors for agricultural or other research, and to pursue any federal permits or waivers necessary to allow industrial hemp to be grown in the State.

Runoff can destroy sensitive ecosystems, even if chemicals are ‘properly applied according to technical instructions.’  Higher-than-ever prices for farming inputs have hit growers hard, despite better yields. More than 270,000 farmers have committed suicide since 1995 after falling into ‘unmanageable debt.'”

Last week, the first of many portable decortication plants also arrived at Hemp, Inc.’s facility. This will allow Hemp, Inc. to help farmers decorticate their crops in states too far away to utilize our processing facilities, such as Colorado, Kentucky, Oregon, Virginia, Pennsylvania and other states.

Hemp, Inc. executives also announced, in a previous press release, that they will build a testing lab within their facility. According to David Schmitt, COO of Hemp, Inc. Industrial Hemp Manufacturing, LLC, the lab will be for new product development testing and testing raw hemp materials, fibers and hemp-based products. Not only will Hemp, Inc.’s decortication facility be the only commercial facility in the United States located in North Carolina, it will also be home to the only commercial testing lab for industrial hemp that we are aware of.

Bruce Perlowin, CEO of Hemp, Inc. says the company will use “reclaimed wood” from North Cal Wood Products to build the new testing lab and new office space at the facility. The “reclaimed wood” used to build the lab and office space, will increase the insulation of the inside of the warehouse, thereby making the facility more energy efficient. The wood is currently in transit from California to Spring Hope, North Carolina and is expected to arrive any day.
