Making Amazing Memories and Living Life to the Fullest

Memories are precious because they are all you have to relive the best parts of your past. After all, what are you, but the sum of your actions and your memories? In the quiet part of the day, who doesn’t enjoy reminiscing about that amazing summer picnic, or the delicious piece of cake you had last holiday? And it’s not just about remembering the great times; it’s about making new amazing memories too.  It’s about grabbing hold of the time that you have and making the most of it so you have great memories to look back on.

Still, remember that memories can be a tricky thing. Whether it’s a sunrise that you catch as you’re driving to work, or remembering the laugh of a loved one, memories are fragile. Things that we wish we had kept firmly in our mind can slip away easily. On top of that, there are so many things that can and do interfere with how you form and hold on to those precious moments in your life.

One major thing that can interfere with enjoying life and making good memories is a problem with alcohol. According to a leading Georgia drug rehab, nearly 17 million adults in the United States had a drinking problem in 2013. Alcohol suppresses the neurotransmitter glutamate, which has a significant role in memory formation.

This suppression is why memories get fuzzy or even blacked out when someone drinks. In fact, a marked improvement in mental health and clarity are one of the first things that a person notices when they stop drinking.

It’s not just drugs or alcohol that can interfere with a person enjoying what life has to offer. Mental health can affect the formation of memories and their quality as well. Sometimes depression rears its ugly head and casts a cloud over an otherwise enjoyable time. According to the World Health Organization, nearly 350 million people in the world suffer from some sort of depression. This includes a single instance of major depression or recurring bouts from things like seasonal affective disorder or even a mental disorder.

It’s important that if you have something standing in the way of forming these good memories that you identify it and get help in dealing with it. In today’s society, the stigma of seeking therapy is mostly gone. That means that nearly everyone you meet will support your efforts to become the healthiest and happiest person you can become. And that’s great, because having a support group around you is one sure way to succeed.

In the end, only you can decide how enjoyable you want life to be. There are moments every day that can slip by if you don’t pay attention. Living your life to its fullest is a decision that only you can make for yourself. If you’re serious about it, then learning to live without the distortion of treatable disorders is imperative. Once you can get yourself free of the shackles and chains that are holding you back, you can enjoy your life like it’s meant to be lived.
